Men in Pants at the De Morgan Centre

On a sunny day last week I wanted to take advantage of the fact that I was not working and took a walk to Wandsworth which is just a few minutes away from Putney where I am currently residing. The plan was to visit the De Morgan Centre as The Men in Pants exhibition was in my artsy radar. This exhibition I have to admit really caught my attention purely of its name. But there is always more than meets the eye.

The De Morgan Centre, situated inside the Wandsworth Museum building, is a museum dedicated to the work of William and Evelyn De Morgan, a husband and wide duo who were key proponents of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the late 19th and early 20th Century.

I firstly explored the beautiful Gallery which includes some of the couple's art pieces and then I viewed the exhibition in question. Here are some photos that I took. Hope you enjoy them :)

Luna (1885)
Love's Passing (1883-1884)
Helen of Troy
Cassandra

The "Men in Pants" exhibition includes drawings and sketches exploring Evelyn's time at the Slade School of Fine Art and sheds new light on the experiences of female Victorian artists. Evelyn displayed a devotion to art from an early age. On the morning of her seventeenth birthday she wrote: "At work a little after 7....17 today, that is to say seventeen years wasted in eating, dawdling and flittering time away... Art is eternal, but life is short... I have not a moment to lose". In the same year Evelyn drew a a study of the male nude from a wooden model, shocking her drawing teacher, who had been employed to instruct her in copying fruit flowers.

The exhibition runs until the 26th April and tickets cost £4.

Have a great day!
